great hardware... Date: October 7, 2009

Level of Expertise: Good

Pros: Easy to Setup/Install, easy to use, fast, quiet

So far (3 weeks in) I am very pleased with the hardware: it is fast and durable (I accidentally dropped it once...while running, still works). It is whisper quiet, something my last backup drive (bought 5 years ago) decidedly is not.

Software that comes with it for backing up comes in a trial form and a purchase form. Since I was not smart enough to upgrade two of my Macs to 10.5 with Time Machine before it became unavailable, even for those of us who cannot use 10.6 (G4 or G5 chips), I had hopes, but it copied only about 10% of my disk. That's a poor ad for the purchase version, so I will not be purchasing it.

I bought this to replace a LaCie that died after noisily backing up Time Machine files for a little over a year. It's stunningly quiet, took no effort at all to set up and looks very nice on the desktop.

To Mount or Not To Mount - That is the Question Date: July 27, 2009

Cons: difficult to use, unreliable, Difficult to Install

That is the question the drive asks itself when trying to mount to a 2006 MacBook Pro 15". After researching why it goes into sleep mode, drops from the system & locks it up sometimes, I've finally (knock on wood) got it to behave in a stable manner. Reloaded the Mac OS, determined the accurate sequence of events to power down the drive, and created a recurring job to "touch" a file on the drive so it won't go to sleep. Too much effort.
